Can Hamsters Eat Carrots?

Deciding to buy a hamster to become your new fellow companion at home is something everyone should do, at least once in their lives. Hamsters make the best pets for those who do not have the necessary amount of time to live around their pets, take them out or playing with them too much. Hamsters are easy to keep and, if treated right, they can turn into really loving and loyal pets.

Moreover, looking after them is simple and cost effective, since all you need is good bedding, water and food supplies at all times, a wheel for them to exercise and a rather comfy and spacious house for your hamster to sleep in.

What Hamsters Eat?

Hamsters are rodents, meaning that they constantly need something to chew to sharpen their teeth. Food like peanut butter may not be the best choice for this.

However, feeding the right amount of food is essential. Don’t forget that they do not have the notion of feeling full, and they tend to deposit extra amounts of food in their cheek pouches. Thus, they should only be fed once a day and with the amount of food that will last for an entire day, not too much.

  • Seedless apples, berries, avocado, bananas, grapes, kiwi, lychee, mango, melons, mint, peaches, pears, squash, all sorts of nuts and seeds. Apples and berries are an important source of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.
  • Veggies like asparagus, cabbage, cauliflower leaves, broccoli, celery, chestnuts, Chinese leaves, coriander, basil, corn salad, lettuce, cucumbers, endives, green beans, kale, parsley, sugar cane, sweet corn, sweet peppers, spinach. Make sure all the food is given in small amounts to suffice for the entire day. Otherwise, excessive food will lead to your hamster storing it in its cheek pouts for later snacks, which can further lead to health problems and obesity.

Do hamsters eat carrots?

Another important dilemma many hamster owners confront with is whether or not their animals like carrots. The simple answer is yes – hamsters can eat carrots and pretty much enjoy them. Carrots are rich in vitamins like A and K, ensuring healthy eyes and stronger night visions. Simply make sure you peel off a carrot and slice it into smaller pieces before feeding it to your little fellow.

However, just like with any other type of food, before introducing new aliments into your hamster’s diet, it is best to monitor his reactions for one or two days. Start by feeding him a small slice and notice whether there are any signs of illness – vomiting or diarrhea. If your hamster’s reactions are good, you can introduce carrots into their daily diet.

The benefits of eating carrots for your hamster

  • Improve vision – Remember that hamsters are nocturnal animals, thus their eyes are sensible to the daylight. Moreover, hamsters are known for their sense of smell and hearing rather than for their acute vision. Carrots are a high source of beta-carotene, which is later converted into vitamin A. further, vitamin A is transformed in the retina in a compound that helps improve night vision and keeps eye healthy.
  • They can help prevent infections – Carrots are highly used in the alternative medicine as means of preventing an infection. They can be easily used on cuts if shredded raw and will help the wound heal faster. Bear in mind that if your hamster’s bedding is not of top quality, your little fellow could cut himself into sharp edges or bedding remains, thus keeping a carrot on the sight is always a good prevention trick.
  • Protects teeth and gums – Hamsters, just like all other rodents, constantly require something to chew in order to trim their on growing teeth. Carrots are some of the best aliments in this case, because they can scrape off plaque and food remains, similar to tooth pastes. Moreover, since they are hard, carrots stimulate gums and trigger a higher amount of saliva, which will be further used to clean the teeth. And, since your fellow rodent is in constant need of having healthy gums and teeth, placing a small, peeled carrot into his cage will represent the perfect snack.

How often can hamsters eat carrots?

There are no signs of negative effects of hamsters eating too many carrots, since carrots do not contain artificial sugars.

However, bear in mind that your pet is much smaller than you, thus you should feed him according to his proportions. In order to make it easier for your hamster to eat the carrot, make sure to slice it in smaller pieces or firmly place it between the bars of his cage so that he can easily eat it.

There are also plenty of tricks you can teach your hamster through food rewards. Carrots are delicious and healthy snacks for your hamster pet, so use them as rewards for learning small tricks like getting out of the cage into your hand or staying in your hand.
