Can Hamsters Eat Cabbage?

Those cute rodents are considered mild and friendly, very suitable for people who love animals, but don’t have conditions for large ones.

Healthy nutrition for a hamster

Hamsters require something to keep their constantly growing teeth on good shape. Some pieces of wood, purchased in pet store, should be fine. An occasional sip of milk for your hamster should also be okay.

As for real food, hamsters should eat seeds mixtures as their basic food. You could find it in pet stores, as well. Hamster food mixtures contain all the essential ingredients your pet needs on a daily basis.

Beside seeds mixtures, hamsters eat fruits and vegetables. They are omnivores, so some other viands would be suitable, as well. Boiled eggs, cooked chicken, diary products, such as skimmed milk and yogurt, are also welcome.

All of these should be given in very small amounts, of course. Hamsters are tiny and their bodies don’t require big feasts, although they just love eating!

Crunchy cabbage only as a treat

Cabbage is super healthy green leafy vegetable, in general. It contains beneficial vitamins and minerals and it is good both for humans and animals. Cabbage is safe for hamsters, but only in small amounts. It should never replace your pet’s basic food. Cabbage is okay to be given rarely and there are actually more suitable vegetables than this one.

Too much cabbage would most likely get your pet diarrhea, bloating or stomach upset of other sort. Two golden rules for healthy hamsters’ nutrition are moderation and variety.

So, cabbage is good, as a treat. Your hamster would most likely enjoy nibbling its crunchy leaves. Feed it only raw cabbage, once in a while and give it really small amount, about one inch across piece for example. As long as you keep it in moderation, your little friend will benefit from cabbage, without any stomach problems. Hamsters should stay away from tomatoes, if you’re wondering if you can mix them up, however.
